zHMC Password Encryption & Audit Report

We have a request from a corporate auditor to explain the security controls surrounding the passwords stored within the HMC. They have requested evidence that the passwords for the accounts (i.e. OPER, SYSPROG, etc) are encrypted on the hard drive in the HMC and/or Support Element. We have explained that the account credentials are stored within the secure operating system appliance of the HMC which is accepted by DISA STIG requirements. That being said, they still want to ensure any userid/password authentication information stored within the HMC is encrypted via best practices (e.g. AES256/AES512). This is a request to make sure userid/password information in an HMC is in an encrypted database and there is a reporting mechanism for the auditor to validate this encryption or an attestation of encryption by the offering manager.

The password for HMC accounts, such as OPERATOR, SYSPROG, etc.) are not stored on the HMC in any form. Instead, a one way hash of the password is stored on the HMC and this is used for validating any input credentials. Since this is the case there is no need for the customer to validate the encryption of account passwords. If you have additional questions, please let me know....
