IBM Z Hardware and Operating Systems Ideas Portal

This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

Diffie-Hellman (DH/DHE) Hardware Support in Crypto Express/ICSF

Add support in hardware (CPACF or more likely, Crypto Express 6S/7S) for Diffie Hellman operations performed as part of DH/DHE/ECDH/ECDHE key exchanges and make the necessary coordinating changes in ICSF to expose this support to the software stack.

Crypto Express currently performs hardware acceleration for asymmetric key operations such as RSA/DSA/ECDSA/etc. but does not support ephemeral key exchanges based on the Diffie-Hellman algorithm. As such, these exchanges are performed in software and expend a considerable amount of general processor time. As support and usage of DHE/ECDHE ciphersuites expands due to more stringent security standards, firms such as ours are forced to choose between security and perfomance when considering ciphers to use.

For your TLS 1.2 connections, your selected cipher suites - TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES256_GCM_SHA384 and TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 are supported with CPACF and ICSF FMID HCR77D1 with z15. If you are using Elliptic Curve in your protocol, for the best performance please use curves whose bit length is 256 or greater.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - z Systems Hardware
    Product - z Systems Hardware
    Component - Crypto HW

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - z Systems Hardware
    Product - z Systems Hardware
    Component - Security / Crypto

In addition, we would need any appropriate changes to System SSL/ICSF made in order to expose this hardware support to the software stack.
