Add zkey / paes support for the ZFS filesystem encryption

Canonical/Ubuntu is exploring using ZFS native encryption (without LUKS) when deploying on the ZFS Linux filesystem.

ZFS is already available on Ubuntu Server for s390x. Currently with LUKS on s390x installers default to using zkey/paes if available (via d-i legacy and also the installer Subiquity, Curtin, and MAAS).

To remain at parity, if ZFS encryption lands, we'd need to have paes/zkey support for ZFS encryption.

Can we explore what would be required to integrate zkey & zfs encryption and in which components (i.e. zkey, kernel, zfs-module, etc) ?

Compared to LUKS(2) this seems to be a leaner way for having hardware assisted encryption on a ZFS filesystem level.

Thank you again for your recommendation. We cannot integrate PAES based encryption with ZFS directly as suggested, but may be able to provide advice on individual integrations. As new scenarios emerge, we can revisit. Thank you!

We have evaluated your request. We cannot integrate PAES based encryption with ZFS because we do not have skills in the ZFS area.
However, if you want to implement the integration we are happy to provide advice on using PAES and zkey. How would you like to proceed?

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - z Systems Hardware
    Product - z Systems Hardware
    Component - Crypto HW

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - z Systems Hardware
    Product - z Systems Hardware
    Component - Security / Crypto

Probably also improved performance due to a leaner stack, hence a shorter sequence of calls.
