IBM Z Hardware and Operating Systems Ideas Portal

This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Configure OSA 5S outside of HMC

OSA 5S cards can only be configured from the HMC, which is traditionally a CE roll. CEs generally are not familiar with having to code OSA card parameters such as loading the SNA microcode on an OSA card. Mainframe networking support team does not generally have access to the HMC. The HMC is heavily secured or may be accessible via onsite access only. This has a serious impact to remote mainframe networking support teams as they would have to go onsite to configure the OSA card or attempt to relay to someone onsite how to configure the OSA card.

In addition, it is not clear how mainframe networking support teams would retrieve OSA metrics if only the HMC can access the OSA 5S card.

Review the following page in the OSA-ICC User's Guide.

Being able to see the Active Speed and various other packet information including the error information is helpful in diagnosing an OSA problem. We used to have access to this information via the OSA/SF. Now we have to get someone to get on the HMC and attempt to walk them through the panels to retrieve the information.

It'd be helpful if we could get this information back via a command. Preferably outside of TCPIP, since TCPIP has to have the OSA active, before the D TCPIP,,OSAINFO command will be able to return anything.

I'm looking for this command to be available on zOS, but I do have some zVM installations where this might come in handy. Can't comment on zVSE.

The HMC is the platform hardware management console, yet for OSA/SF this function had been spread across multiple operating systems. This functionality was consolidated onto the HMC for OSA Express5S (and all future) cards, and is not something we have any plans to change. Since the initial introduction of HMC support we have added functionality to the HMC in this area, specifically relative to the Query OAT function. If there is still some information you feel is lacking through that interface, we would be happy to consider adding it. In regard to the desire for OSA metrics not being available through the operating system, can you specify which metrics you are specifically interested in and we can investigate further the possibility of making those accessible via an OS display command. Understanding which operating systems you would like to see these reported in would also be useful information.
