Intelligent tape devices should provide better mount information

In our modern times, most if not all tape mounts are now managed by intelligent devices, whether virtual tape systems or robotic systems.

These external hardware devices are actually computer systems with hardware attached, and as such should be able to provide us with more information about individual tape mounts.

It is proposed that intelligent tape and virtual tape devices return more information about tape mounts to the z/OS or z/VM system and that this information be recorded by SMF. See the solution section for some specifics.

IBM agrees that it would be beneficial to add an extension to the existing SMF type 21 record (statistics by volume) that would enable the library to provide additional data on the mounted volume. This record (and its data) is cut when the volume is demounted.
