Need more detailed explanation about analyzing the possible causes of message IOS080I

My customer wants to use the I/O timing facility of z/OS ( MIH IOTIMING paramenter) with the option for message-only processing.
The manual describes the 4 possible causes of the message IOS080I indicating that the I/O exceeded the I/O timeout interval defined.

The causes can be:
1.Long running error recovery in the hardware due to some device or control unit error
2. Long running error recovery in the software (possibly device support routines and/or applications software attempting to recover from an error) due to some device or control unit error
3. A missing interrupt
4. A normally long running channel program.

The customer would like to know how to analyze the causes in detail, and is requesting for a documentation enhancement with this info.
