IBM Z Hardware and Operating Systems Ideas Portal

This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Sizing IXGBRWSE BUFFLEN / System Logger IXGBRWSE Performance Enhancement

RC08 RSN80F (IXGRSNCODEBADBUFSIZE) is returned by System Logger when the data result of an IXGBRWSE invocation is too large to fit into the buffer provided by the caller. Currently, the recommended method to determine the BUFFLEN necessary for an IXGBRWSE request is to use the value returned in BLKSIZE when an IXGBRWSE request ends with IXGRSNCODEBADBUFSIZE. (Reference: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos/2.5.0?topic=ixg-ixgbrwse-browseread-log-stream) This method in inefficient, as it results in significant overhead processing within System Logger.

Another alternative method to size a buffer of appropriate length is to use the MAXBUFSIZE value, which is returned in the result of an IXGCONN request. A potential disadvantage of this method is that MAXBUFSIZE may not have been appropriately defined for a log stream; if MAXBUFSIZE was set to the maximum, it is possible an unnecessarily large IXGBRWSE buffer would be allocated.

This request for enhancement is for System Logger to provide an efficient method for the user to appropriately size the buffer required for the data results of an IXGBRWSE request and improve the performance of System Logger to avoid the overheard incurred when a IXGRSNCODEBADBUFSIZE condition is detected.
