IBM Z Hardware and Operating Systems Ideas Portal

This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Enhance zERT discovery to be more accurate in recognizing and recording TLS sessions with very large handshake messages and unusual timing

zERT discovery is currently unable to recognize TLS sessions when handshake messages exceed the maximum TLS record length. It also relies on timers in specific situations that can sometimes generate misleading information regarding TLS sessions that slightly exceed the bounds of those timers. Please enhance the zERT discovery logic to:

  • handle TLS handshake messages that span TLS records as well as

  • TLS sessions that exceed timer boundaries in cases where watching for specific handshake data or connection behavior can be used to generate more accurate results.

Much of this Idea is addressed via APAR PH63197. In particular:
    - When a TLS/SSH handshake is in progress within 10 seconds (i.e. zERT has detected the beginnings of a handshake), it will write a record for the connection only when the TLS/SSH handshake completes successfully or fails. It will not write a record when the handshake is in progress.
    - When a TLS session is terminated, zERT will not write a record until the TCP connection is terminated (connection term or short-term record) or data flows on the TCP connection in the clear (protection state change record).

However, handling TLS handshake messages that span TLS records has not been addressed yet, so we will keep this Idea as an Uncommitted Candidate to represent that remaining piece of work.
