We recently had a problem where the VTOC was full or near full on multiple volumes. Many batch jobs were failing when attempting to do an IDCAMS DEFINE and IDCAMS was generating the following message:
IDC3027I NO SPACE IN VTOC OR VTOC INDEX
The Programmer action section of the message text refers to "the volume", but there is no indication in the IDCAMS output or the joblog in general as to exactly which volume is affected, making it difficult to know what volume to fix--especially in a very large environment with hundreds or thousands of volumes.
It would be helpful if the IDCAMS output would include the VOL=SER of the affected volume... either by adding it to the the IDC3027I message or adding a new message with that information.
