USS Enhanced ASCII automatic conversion support for IBM-1141 and other code pages.

We would appreciate an enhancement in Unix System Services – Enhanced ASCII automatic conversion – so that it also works for code pages other than IBM-1047, such as IBM-1141.

Currently, the following restriction exists:
Only the EBCDIC IBM-1047 encoding of portable characters is supported.

We have a specific use case:
At present, we use the Communications Server FTPD to transfer MVS datasets that are encoded in IBM-1141. End users utilize the FTPD subcommands ascii and site sbd=(IBM-1141,ISO8859-1) to ensure correct EBCDIC/ASCII conversion. However, the site command is sometimes forgotten.

We would like to access this MVS dataset via DSFS (which would then be tagged with -t IBM-1141 T=on) to perform the file transfer using SFTP and OpenSSH.

Advantages: End users would no longer need to worry about EBCDIC/ASCII conversion.

Handling errors would be avoided.

z/OS UNIX supports automatic conversion of other code pages by using z/OS Unicode Services. Processing is similar to the enhanced ASCII automatic conversion.
This automatic conversion can be enabled by setting AUTOCVT or _BPXK_AUTOCVT to ALL instead of ON.
