IBM Z Hardware and Operating Systems Ideas Portal

This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

PING Enhancement

On command line when issuing a PING command, I would like to add an additional feature to allow time interval between multiple PING counts. This feature is already available in UNIX OSs. For example:

Ping Example 1. Increase or Decrease the Time Interval Between Packets
By default ping waits for 1 second before sending the next packet. You can increase or decrease this using option -i as shown below.

Increase Ping Time Interval
Example: Wait for 5 seconds before sending the next packet.

$ ping -i 5 IP

    A workaround would be to create a shell script that adds the new ?-I? (capital I as in Interval) option that indicates how long to wait between ping requests. Here is an example:

    #!/bin/sh

    helpFunction()
    {
    echo "Usage: oping|ping <-l length> <-c count> <-t timeout> <-p tcpname>"
    echo " <-i interface> <-s srcip> <-A ipv4|ipv6> <-P yes|ignore>"
    echo " <-I interval> <-n> <-v> host"
    echo " oping|ping -h"
    echo " oping|ping -?"
    exit 1;
    }

    args=$@ # save input args

    while [[ $# -gt 0 ]]
    do
    case $1 in
    -c) count="$2"
    shift
    shift ;;
    -I) interval="$2"
    shift
    shift ;;
    -A|-i|-l|-p|-P|-t)
    shift
    shift ;;
    -?|-h) helpFunction ;;
    *) shift ;;
    esac
    done

    set -- $(echo $args) # restore input args
    set -- $(echo $@ | sed "s/-I [0-9]\+//;s/ / /") # remove -I option
    set -- $(echo $@ | sed "s/-c [0-9]\+//;s/ / /") # remove -c option

    if [ -z $count ]
    then
    count=1
    fi

    if [ -z $interval ]
    then
    interval=1
    fi

    x=0
    while [ $x -lt $count ]
    do
    sleep $interval
    /usr/lpp/tcpip/bin/oping $@
    x=$x+1
    done
