Support more than 4 Subchannel Sets in each LCSS

With the plan of defining a MM 4-Site disk topology, the base devices of each copy of disk will occupy all the 4 Subchannel Sets currently supported leaving no Subchannel Set for defining Alias devices. Therefore to support a MM 4-site disk topology there will be a requirement of being able to define more than 4 Subchannel Sets otherwise it will be challenging to have all the disk devices defined.

The addition of a 5th subchannel set would be a major architectural impact throughout the Z stack, and hence not something we have any plans to do. We do understand the need for 4 subchannel sets in a 4-site solution, which we do support today. We also do realize that a 4-site solution using 4 subchannel sets in a Logical Channel Subsystem does not allow the alias devices to be placed in their own subchannel set. However there are some alternative existing technologies that can be deployed to alleviate this constraint: 1) Device consolidation ? larger devices can be used, minimizing the overall number of devices/UCBs required 2) Use of multiple Logical Channel Subsystems ? placing sysplexes in in different LCSSs allows you take advantage of multiple instances of the subchannel sets (each LCSS has it's own SS0/SS1/SS2/SS3).

Would IBM please provide more detailed explanation why this idea is not being considered. Is there other alternate way to manage the alias devices in a MM4-Site configuration?
