VOLSER in an AUTOIPL Policy

We would like the AUTOIPL Policy (contained in a DIAGnn member) to accept a VOLSER for MVS (for both LOAD Address and LOADPARM) and SADMP specifications.

Upon interpreting the DIAGnn member, I would expect the code to issue a UCBSCAN (or whatever method is preferable), to resolve the Unit Address, then use that for the active AUTOIPL Policy

    Hi IBM,


    any comments/updates on this requirement? We would really like to see this implemented. The background is quite easy...:

    Currently, you have to use device numbers. This is VERY error prone...:

    • z/OS migration and SADump program on a new VOLSER -> can be forgotten to update

    • HyperSwap if you have 3390B devices and not 3390D special secondary -> can be forgotten to update after an HyperSwap

    • With VOLSER you could use System Symbols to automatically use the correct SADump volser if the SAdump program is placed to one of the z/OS related DASDs (like an CATALOG volume) if there are conventions for the name of the DASD devices

    • With VOLSER you could do stuff like: Prepare for an unplanned IPL with LAST specified for MVS IPL and prepare DIAGxx members for VARY XCF,xxx,OFFLINE,REIPL for an SYSRES switch

    Implementation of this should be quite easy. :-) Would love to see this feature soon.
