Way to extract sub-object of parsed JSON

We'd like a way to parse a large JSON file but then extract the JSON for a given entry handle. So like HWTJGVAL but works for an object and turns the address and length of the JSON representing that object.

For example, for the sample JSON:

"references": {

"previous": {"name": "That Object", "chars": "A-Z0-Z)(}{"},

"next": {"name": "The Other Object", "chars": ",."}

}

}

Perhaps I want to extract just the "previous" object. The parser knows it ends just before "next" label but to extract that currently would require us to parse it ourselves (and appropriately skip past the end bracket inside the "chars" string). Alternately we can extract each field and create a new JSON object, but that's a lot more code.
