This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Currently DFDSS does not produce backup or dump output in a form that can be easily transmitted across the network with normal basic FTP clients (e.g. Linux, Windows) and servers. The dump normally has to be further processed by TRSMAIN or XMIT before sending via ftp causing a considerable increase in time and space requirements.
If this is not done and the coorresponding TRSMAIN unpack (or RECEIVE) performed at the receiving end, the dump will not be
processed by DSS at the receving end. This seems to be caused by the short block at the start of the dump which is written by DSS. There may be other reasons.
This problem could be simply fixed by DSS writing standard FBS records.

FTP FTP/S have become industry standards for moving data, like this example, for many years now. There are already the challenges of record type and ebcdic/ascii/binary conversion so why not make the output of dump data more formatted and easier to work with. It's great that there are tools to format the data, but why? Why go through the extra steps wasting time and resources when there are more efficient ways to do things.
