This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

In preparation for Global Mirror and Thin Provisioned volumes in DS8950F Storage Manager we need to run SPACEREL on all available LPARS, so after running a few weeks we noticed that the messages are not really useful at determining freed space. Currently we are triggering only from the ADR523I (001)-SRFP (01), SPACEREL FOR VOLUME ??????? HAS COMPLETED which technically is not enough information in a batch job to identify how well we are doing freeing up extents and freed space. Consider this needed update.

The SPACERELEASE operation is designed to determine all free-space extents on the volume and request that they be freed. The extent that describes each free space area on a volume may or not align with physically backed storage. If it is backed by physical storage, the extent may or may not include at least 1 full ESE physical extent to be freed. When the requested freed extents does align with 1+ ESE physical extent the operation is performed asynchronously in the storage hardware. They determine if and when space can be freed. Due to this delay, it is not possible to have DFSMSdss report if space was physically freed or not. Instead other tooling is provided to query the storage pool.
Therefore, due to the design of ESE, we are unable to provide additional support at this time.
