It doesn't matter much to me which package manager we port (rpm, apt, pacman, etc...). They key is that we need to standardize the use of a package manager that is designed for managing file system-based applications. This includes file system-based program products that are managed using SMP/E today. File system-based products are an afterthought in SMP/E and as a result everything from packaging to installing and managing file system-based products using SMP/E is far more complex and difficult than it needs to be. Moving in this direction for file system-based products and open source tools would go a long way in simplifying and standardizing they way we build and manage file system-based tools and products.
If this was an extension of SMP/e, like an SMP/e api that would also update the SMP/e db (CSI) as part of the install process, I think it would go a long way in ensuring customer adoption
Very good idea Emma !
