Non-intrusive catalog reorg/transformation to RLS-managed

A completely non-intrusive reorg function is needed to migrate non-RLS catalog to RLS catalog. The strategic direction for z/OS catalogs is RLS management so it behoves IBM / Mainstar to develop a completely non-intrusive function to transform non-RLS catalogs into RLS managed catalogs. Currently, reorg tools do not allow access during a reorg once it starts and require the requester to wait until the reorg completes, which introduces a delay of varying duration for the requester, or worst case, an unplanned outage if requester is for a critical system task. Obviously, this functionality will require sophisticated design and coding in order to handle concurrent access (read, update) for/to the catalog entries during the reorg process without requiring the requester to wait until the reorg is completed.

This item is a valid requirement but unlikely to be given high enough priority to be placed into the product plan. If this requirement is high value, please re-open it, or open a new requirement.

The ability to convert a non-RLS BCS to a RLS BCS via SMSVSAM and IDCAMS ALTER functions referred to in the follow-up comments/notes is excellent way to convert from no-RLS to RLS. However, RLS was a strategic direction when first introduced by IBM. At the same time, and even today, there was/is an underlying need to reorg a busy shared non-RLS BCS apart without requiring a complete outage. This "underlying need" was "inherited", so to speak, after the fact and exists in a 24x7x365 parallel sysplex with multiple JES2plexes running multiple master catalogs and sharing several BCSs across the JES2plexes/MCATplexes in the sysplex. That type of outage is unacceptable to upper management business leaders. Although a reorg could be done if an outage is obtained -- it is a practical impossiblity yet that is where we find ourselves today.

RLS enhancements have been added since this request so IDCAMS alter can address. However, the ability to reorg busy system BCSs is still needed.

Why do you think there is a need for a reorg to move from nonRLS to RLS?

We require more information. All that is needed is an ALTER RLSENABLE command. There is no conversion or reorg necessary to change a catalog to RLS.
