IBM Z Hardware and Operating Systems Ideas Portal

This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

lightweight zosmf restfiles/ds option for faster minimal dataset list with attributes

Current X-IBM-Attributes options for the zosmf /restfiles/ds API enable retrieval of just the dataset names, dataset+volume, and a "base" option which returns all information consistent with ISPF 3.4.

The base option can easily cause timeouts if the number of datasets exceed ~30-40 -- if this occurs in a batch/async application, it can be adjusted for, but in an interactive environment such as VSCode/ZOpenEditor, the user experiences a failure to load a list of datasets.

Some of the attributes returned through the base option are not necessary for displaying a list of datasets for editing; only a few are used to decide whether it can be edited:

  • online/offline

  • available (not open/exclusive enqueued)

  • nonvsam

  • PS or PO

  • record format (V/F)

Information such as volume, create date, last reference date, allocation units and extents, %age space used are not necessary.

The largest overhead, besides reading and formatting all the DSCB information appears to be associated with the RACF open/read checking. Equivalent DSCB information can be retrieved by LISTDS and ISPF 3.4 without trying to open every dataset -- can zosmf dslist support an option with skips that step per dataset?

Perform a LISTDS or ISPF 3.4 against an HLQ which includes a subset of dsns which the user does not have read access to -- check system log for RACF ICH408I errors.

Perform same dslevel search with zosmf API (base information) and observe the ICH408I messages -- zosmf is attempting an alloc and possible open on each dsn
