Backup/Restore During zOSMF Software Update

Scenario: A user would like to apply updates to their Software Instance in Software Update on z/OSMF.

Current: Right now, you can perform a corrective install, recommended install, or functional install and the environment is updated with no backup taken.

Future: We would like the option in z/OSMF to backup the existing SMPE environment (CSI, Target, and Distributed libs) before any Software Update install is performed. Then the existing process can continue. Likewise, we would also like an option to restore a software instance from a backup.

We currently do this process manually via JCL outside the tool, but we feel this is a good failsafe measure especially for persons unfamiliar with SMP/E and uncomfortable with JCL.

How would this solution cater for the varied inputs a site would want into a DSS dump of the SMPE env? PARALLEL, COMPRESS, ZCOMPRESS, ADMIN, additional supporting datasets you want alongside the dump, to DASD or TAPE, UNIT, EXPDT etc etc.

The first step for any APPLY or ACCEPT processing is to backup the SMP/e environment (Global, DLIB and Target CSIs).
