This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).
We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:
Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,
Post an idea.
Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.
Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

This requirement is being addressed through continual delivery of the DS8K transparent cloud tiering capability that enables the disk controller to move data directly between disk and TS7700 or cloud object storage systems. Support for migrate/recall is available in V2R3 via APAR OA51622. This RFE will remain open as further support will be added via continuous development efforts.
DFSMShsm's strategic direction is to get out of the business of actually moving the data, through DS8000 transparent cloud tiering! In 2019, z/OS and Storage made available new function that enables DFSMShsm to invoke a DS8000 to migrate data directly to a TS7700. NONE of the data passes through z/OS, so HSM blocksize becomes irrelevant as all of the data is passing directly from disk controller to tape controller. Additionally, RECYCLE is eliminated because HSM no longer has to manage at the data on logical tapes as the data is stored in a new Object partition on the TS7700. Obviously, CPU is significantly reduced. This support enables z/OS to tier data from the highest online storage to the lowest offline storage w/o the data ever passing through z/OS. Additionally, this support can migrate directly to a cloud object storage.

It's a great pity that there isn't any reaction of IBM to a RFE after 2 years! RFEs often being ignored is well known missbehaviour since many years.
Two years later, and nothing has happend.
Is HSM and large Files not of importance?
All Values in new Machines are getting larger and larger, but HSM still uses 16KB-Blocks. Maybe unchanged since the last 35 years.

Before opening this RFE i have opened an PMR. I was called back with information, that larger block sizes would be useful if your average file size would be 100MB or larger.
But HSM should not do something with my 1-Track-Files, because there is (nearly) no space freeing, but much administrative overhead. So HSM should only handle Files with larger sizes.
So it is no argument, because all relevant files are larger ones.
[All Information is only for Migration purpose, not backup]
Added to GSE ADL-Watchlist only for testing purposes. Ralf
Creating a new RFE based on Community RFE #61863 in product z/OS.
