DFSMShsm full volume dump is still limited to 40 volumes

During our HSM space management, we have defined one dump class, which runs once a week. At this dump class, we have included our large application development department volumes (EAVs with 1182006 Cylinders per Volume).

During our last full volume dump, we had seen two problems. The first one was a very worst I/O Performance during the dump process. This will discussed with IBM at Case TS005165299. The second observation is for some EAVs, which are very highly used / filled, that the dump fails with ARTC0624I (The number of tapes required for the full volume dump has exceeded the DFSMShsm 40-volume limit.).

Currently we only have 6 GB Volumes defined at our VTS Environment. Our Storage Guys are now in discussion with our IBM PFE (HW-Support) to implement some 25 GB Volumes with a separate Management class to route this EAV dumps to the 25 GB Volumes.

However, please check the HSM Environment to enhance the dump process as well. That the full volume dump also supports 254 volumes, like it the case for migrate or backup. Furthermore, please check all other dependencies e.g. regarding recycle and so on, that this also is compatible to the new volume sizes.

    IBM agrees that it is past time for DFSMShsm to extend the dump volume limit to 254 volumes. We will add this requirement to our active backlog, but cannot commit to a delivery date at this time.
