Buffering log of NIP console

If an IPL of a z/OS system gets stuck in the NIP phase there is only very limited information available on diagnosing the error. Usually it is only the 24 lines of output on the NIP console. If the messages describing the error roll out of the console there is no way to retrieve them. The integrated 3270 console on the HMC has 39 lines of output, but in some cases this might also not be sufficient.

We would like to have some kind of buffer for the console messages during the NIP phase, e.g. the integrated 3270 console could be enhanced so that it is possible to use the scroll bar to scroll back.

A feature like this could reduce downtimes caused by an unsuccessful IPL.

    If you do not define any NIP consoles in the IODF, or if none of the defined NIP consoles in the IODF are available, Operating System Messages on the HMC will be used as the default NIP console.  Operating System Message already provides the requested functionality of a log that can be scrolled backward for much more than 24 lines.

    This item should be open for HMC instead of Consoles. According to the HMC dev squad - although the integrated 3270 console is limited in what it can display, NIP messages can be configured to be sent to other places besides the 3270, like operating system console integration and OS message task. Since there are other options, this item would not receive high enough priority for them to invest the effort into
