IBM Z Hardware and Operating Systems Ideas Portal

This is the public portal for all IBM Z Hardware and Operating System related offerings. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Increase SMT Simultaneous multithreading greater than 2

Since several month, we have lot of Rest Api calling DB2 from DDF gateway and DB2 API rest use is increasing.

These Api Rest are very short and execute on ZIIP. Many years ago, when we activate SMT to 2, we noticed a real benefits for DB2 running application on a remote site and many years ago  there where no API and only short sql request. So, because short DB2 request increased, it can be a good idea to increase SMT greater than 2.

We appreciate this request and and glad to hear that you have seen real benefit from the Simutaneous Multi-Threading (SMT) feature introduced on z13.  When we developed SMT for IBM Z/LinuxONE processors, we chose to implement 2 hardware threads (SMT-2) rather than a larger number of threads (e.g. SMT-4) based on a thorough analysis of the relative cost and value of these options.  For a variety of reasons, the marginal benefit (in terms of throughput per core) provided by supporting additional hardware threads diminishes significantly as the thread count increases.  Conversely the marginal cost of SMT-4 over SMT-2 (in terms of hardware circuits, silicon area, and design complexity) is substantial.  Adding support for more hardware threads in future IBM Z/LinuxONE processors would consume development and silicon resources that can more effectively be spent delivering greater value - including increased core performance - for our clients.  Given that, we have no plans to increase the number of hardware threads per core in future IBM Z/LinuxONE processors.
If you are seeing constraints on the overall zIIP capacity in your systems, you should seriously consider increasing the number of zIIPs.  The firmware and software are designed to make very efficient use of the capacity available in the system.
If you wish to discuss this further we would be happy to set up a time for that.
