SRCHFOR within SDSF

ISPF allows the use of a SRCHFOR primary command from the data set list. The command will search for text within each data set in the list and identify which data sets contain the text. SDSF should support a SRCHFOR command to search the job steps listed when a job is opened with the ? line command. SRCHFOR should look for the text within any portion of the job step files. The job step that contains the search text should be identified.

SRCHFOR as a primary command should be used in order to be consistent with ISPF. SRCHFOR in SDSF should support similar parameters as is supported by ISPF SRCHFOR.

SDSF currently supports a FIND command, but the scope of its search is limited to the DD name. The requirement here is to search the entire body of the job step.

This is similar to RFE 59846 and RFE 59845, but the IBM developer closed that as 'delivered' while commenting that we can do it ourselves using SDSF/REXX. The requirement was not for an API so that I could do it myself, but for SDSF to provide the search capability within SDSF panels. The IBM developer commented that the requirement was understood, but much time has passed and still this requirement is not actually 'delivered'.

I forgot to mention that I think the Rexx/SDSF interface is excellent and I have found many uses for it. But SRCHFOR should not have been one of them.

I also took up the challenge to build my own search facility. If a mere user like me can do that, why cannot such a feature be added to the SDSF product itself? It wasn't hard to build, but to expect every customer to do so makes for a poor customer experience.

This would be functionality within SDSF and would not require changing the ISPF SRCHSOR since the must occur within the SDSF 'datasets'. Please reconsider.

If someone has this code and would be willing to share please consider contributing to the CBTTAPE.

The required function needs additional function from ISPF that are not in plan. Therefore this item is no longer being considered for SDSF.

I agree that the "already delivered" response to previous RFEs on this topic was not very satisfactory. I did take up the challenge and build my own search facility, but expecting all customers to do that is not reasonable.
