ISPF View/Edit entry panel is giving a ?Request failed? error when browsing a relative generation that does not exist.

When entering the name of a relative generation of a GDG that has no entries (e.g. SYS3.TEST.PDS(0)) on the View or Edit Entry panel, it will result in error message "Request Failed". If help is selected, it will display pop-up message "ISRD024 Allocation/deallocation failed. Press Help for more information". Selecting help again will result in a Dynamic Allocation Error Tutorial panel, which displays the SVC 99 Error code (12), SVC 99 Error reason code (0394) and SVC 99 Information reason code (0000). There is also a message that states "Press ENTER key for more information or enter END command to terminate the dialog". Pressing ENTER brings up the ISPF Program Development Facility Tutorial and END terminates the dialog. This will also occur when entering a relative generation of a dataset that doesn't exist and doesn't exceed the GDG limit defined for that GDG index.

Users find the "Request Failed" message and the help panels confusing and not meaningful. They would prefer to see a more meaningful message similar to the message presented when specifying an absolute generation for a GDG that either has no entries or the absolute generation doesn't exist. This results in message "Data set not cataloged". Selecting help results in message "ISRD028 'SYS3.TEST.PDS.G0001V00' was not found in catalog." This same message is also displayed when specifying a relative generation number for a GDG where that number is higher than the GDG limit defined for that GDG.

I have always hated this error message, but figured it was IBM and they would never listen to the little guys who use their products to get stuff fixed. I hope IBM proves me wrong!
