ADRDSSU fails to reinitialize a space efficient flash copy volume if the volume UCB shows a count greater than zero. This leaves the volume online without a VTOC and subject to I/O errors if referenced. When using the FCWD option with ADRDSSU, a RETRY option needs to be added to account for transitory holds on volumes and ultimately allow a Space Efficient volume to be re-initialized within the same step that the Withdrawal took place.

This was originally opened as SR 27924,082,000 but IBM said it had to be addressed via an RFE. I did not agree but it didn't matter. We have had to resize all of our SMF MANx datasets and rework our backup processes in order to avoid having SMF dump processing interfere with the backups. This handled most of the problem. We have had two recurrences. After applying RSU0707 maintenance the problem has taken on a different form. Now when ADRDSSU tries to re-init the volume, we get the following error message and the step fails (which it didn't in the past).
DR287I (003)-DDTFP(01), FCWITHDRAW WAS ISSUED FOR VOLUME VRDB67 ON
UNIT F6A6 BUT THE VOLUME WAS NOT INITIALIZED, RETURN CODE IS 6
ADR006I (003)-STEND(02), 2017.322 01:42:01 EXECUTION
ENDS
ADR013I (003)-CLTSK(01), 2017.322 01:42:01 TASK COMPLETED WITH RETURN
CODE 0008
ADR012I (SCH)-DSSU (01), 2017.322 01:42:01 DFSMSDSS PROCESSING
COMPLETE. HIGHEST RETURN CODE IS 0008 FROM:
TASK 003
I suspect something changed with the RSU0707 maintenance. I tried to reopen the SR but IBM said this is a different problem and instructed me to open a new record.
The hold on the volume is transitory and this could be handled with an additional parm for ADRDSSU that allows the re-init to be retried.
Perhaps, this should be an SR?
