During CDS backup HSM could not locate the oldest backup copy of a cds and issued misleading message ARC0744E RC36 REAS8 telling there is a catalog problem. IBM support found the number of volumes of the cds backup copy to be limited to 18. IBM will adapt the message but the limit should be raised to z/OS value 59.

Also, I presume you are using virtual tape. What size are used for CDS backups?
As a circumvention, have you made or considered making the BCDS & MCDS multi-clustered. Recommend making 4-way clusters. This will split-up the backup tapes needed to each cluster. Plus it will have the added benefit of concurrency during the back up process. Thus reducing the window needed for processing.
