DFSMSrmm EXPDT retention method can exploit management classes to set expiration dates, can retain data sets based on catalog status, etc., but there are some retention settings that were previously implemented with the VRSEL retention method that are not possible with EXPDT because of current limitations with the ACS routines. More specifically, with the VRSEL retention method, there were ways to handle uncataloged tape data set expiration the same as SMS DASD; however, the EXPDT retention method's exploitation of management classes cannot handle some scenarios with the current read-only variables available for ACS routines. We believe that allowing ACS routines to check a data set's disposition can help clients emulate their prior retention policy regarding uncataloged data sets. This is currently a barrier for client's who are migrating from the VRSEL retention method to the EXPDT retention method.
